1931 is part of old Shanghai, it’s one of the older cafe/restaurants in Shanghai its romantic colonial Shanghai setting, this small restaurant has recently undergone a renovation in favor of a more traditional Western look (flower wallpaper, thick drapes, upholstered chairs. They also have expanded to another store front for their cafe and desert shop. Happily, traces of old Shanghai remain — wall posters of the 1930s, tiny intimate tables, and waitresses clothed in traditional qipao dresses (high collar, side slits) — making this a still-pleasant spot to drop in for a Shanghai lunch, a light dinner, or late-night drinks. You should call for reservation if your more than 2 people. They have to arrange the tables for larger groups. The owner has done everything to the fine little details like the hand painted plates, candle holders and their silverware. Popular menu items include lamb or duck scallion pancakes, Shanghai fried noodles, and Yu Yuan fried dumplings, the popular Steamed Delicious Crab and Powder Silk in Casserole (RMB138). The glass noodles deliver their chili punch with admirable force, and the crab is tasty too when coaxed from its shell. The portion of YuYuan Fried Dumplings is generous for RMB35, so were the Shanghai spring rolls there’s a full bar with a range of reasonably priced liquors, as well as coffees, teas, and fresh juices. The mini deserts were perfect, not to sweet and a lot of detail for a mini pastry. They have a smoking section. Thank god!!. A great place for a date in Shanghai.
