The city will build at least 2 solar power generation sustems in the Shanghai suburbs this year. One is being built in Lingang New City in Nanhui District near the Yangshan Deep-water Port. The other will be in Chongming Island. The Chongming project, with an installed capacity of 600 kilowatts, will be the biggest solar generator in the city, covering 6,000 sq. The other generation will have a capacity of 25 Kilowatts. Solar water heaters also will be installed in schools, homes for the aged and some military units. The city gets more than 2,000 hours of sunlight a year.

It’s very interesting that China has taken a faster pace to solar heating than in the U.S.. I see lots of houses even in the country side of Shanghai use solar heating. Lots of the Shanghai homes seem to have the solar heaters on the roofs of the house. The solar heating is not cheap even in Shanghai. Given that Shanghai has so many cars and the gas emmisons are filling the air, it’s good to know Shanghai has also gone to solar heating and the energy saving light bulbs.
